About the exhibition

"...promises to be a magnificent, intriguing, sometimes shocking, sometimes risque show". The Evening Standard

Exposed offers a fascinating look at pictures made on the sly, without the explicit permission of the people depicted. With photographs from the late nineteenth century to present day, the pictures present a shocking, illuminating and witty perspective on iconic and taboo subjects.

Beginning with the idea of the 'unseen photographer', Exposed presents 250 works by celebrated artists and photographers including Brassaï's erotic Secret Paris of the 1930s images; Weegee's iconic photograph of Marilyn Monroe; and Nick Ut's reportage image of children escaping napalm attacks in the Vietnam War. Sex and celebrity is an important part of the exhibition, presenting photographs of Liz Taylor and Richard Burton, Paris Hilton on her way to prison and the assassination of JFK. Other renowned photographers represented in the show include Guy Bourdin, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Philip Lorca DiCorcia, Walker Evans, Robert Frank, Nan Goldin, Lee Miller, Helmut Newton and Man Ray.

The UK is now the most surveyed country in the world. We have an obsession with voyeurism, privacy laws, freedom of media, and surveillance – images captured and relayed on camera phones, YouTube or reality TV.

Much of Exposed focuses on surveillance, including works by both amateur and press photographers, and images produced using automatic technology such as CCTV. The issues raised are particularly relevant in the current climate, with topical debates raging around the rights and desires of individuals, terrorism and the increasing availability and use of surveillance. Exposed confronts these issues and their implications head-on.

The Big Debate - Motion Passed

It was almost an overwhelming majority - the house voted that computers HAVE made life worse. It was a great debate with some excellent points made by both sides of the panel and a very lively debate by the floor. Well done to everyone that took part, especially Elio, who was the only speaker who attended to speak for the motion!

I was unable to get any sound out of the you tube record and video I was hoping to play so please take some time to listen to the words of Joni Mitchell sing at the Big Sur in California in 1969. It was at the beginning of space travel, a notion of the earth as part of the cosmos and half a million young people able to travel to Woodstock - an idealistic view of what the future could be.

Perform your own 6 minute short or photographic project or just sit back and enjoy the mix as Foto8's Jon Levy lines up our guest projectionists as they combine slide shows, film, music and live performance along with audience participation.

Presentations must run no more than six minutes and should incorporate live element(s), interpreted loosely. Your subject matter can be newly completed work, projects in progress, or previous productions that may now enjoy new relevance and potential within this forum. This is an opportunity to make an impact with your work and generate a response to a story that matters to you.

Carousel – Slide Slam, a book in the making
The team at Foto8, comprising editors Lauren Heinz, Max Houghton, Harry Hardie alongside founder Jon Levy and the Foto8 designers will consult with projectionists from each night to assist in making an edit that can form the basis for a Blurb book of their story. In addition Foto8 will collect the commentary and visual output from each event with a view to publishing these in a Blurb edition of its own at the conclusion of the Carousel series.

Detroit was known as the worlds centre for Ford car manufacture and an important source of popular music, its nicknames were, Motor City and Motown. In 1950, the city was the fourth-largest in the USA.

Shot in Toronto, Canada, 'Factum' is a series of in-depth video portraits of twins - and one set of triplets - that extends Breitz's ongoing interest in doubling, portraiture and identity. Titled after Robert Rauschenberg's 'Factum I' and 'II' (1957) near-identical twin paintings, Breitz's 'Factum' explores the modes of internal and external forces that drive individuation.

The exhibition comprises of photographs from two bodies of work made in 2008 and 2009, Evaders and Hide and Seek. As in previous series, Gersht’s depictions of landscape address ideas about memory, history and identity. They are images of places or journeys that are simultaneously physical and metaphysical, partly real and partly mythological. Photography’s claim to truth is questioned and rather than being presented with the depiction of a specific moment in time, the viewer is left instead with images that are suggestive of something that happened in the past, or might happen in the future.

William Eggleston is one of the most influential photographers of the last half-century. Born in 1939, Eggleston has lived and worked in his hometown of Memphis, Tennessee throughout most of his sixty-year career. Hailed as the father of colour photography, his ability to find beauty in the banal has changed the way we look at the world. Along with Gary Winogrand and Lee Friedlander, Eggleston forms part of a generation of post-war photographers whose works liberated the medium from the restrictive rules and conventions of the period. A Southerner raised on a cotton plantation in the Mississippi Delta, Eggleston has created a singular portrait of his native South. His colour prints monumentalise the everyday: the parking lots, diners, motel rooms and lives of the people of his native environment. Behind Eggleston's deceptive casualness lies an acute and instinctive sense of colour and form, and under his gaze the ordinary is invested with powerful significance.

Renowned Finnish film and video artist Eija-Liisa Ahtila. It will include three important moving image installations never before seen in England.

Ahtila is best known for works that concentrates on narratives in human life together with the relationships and primal emotions that underlie them. She describes her films as ‘human dramas’ because they play on the central themes of our existence, such as love, death, sexuality, the difficulty of communication, and individual identity – both its formation and disintegration.

This film documents the work of Reuters photojournalists working in the Middle East in 2004, covering the news: terrorist attacks, suicide bombers, demonstrations, funerals. Reinhard is head of Reuters bureau for the Middle East, and we follow him and his team of local photographers in Israel and Palestine as he seeks to cover both sides of the story in this long strife-drawn region, to make sense of events and to tell the story. Made five years ago, it would be hard to say that much had changed since then.

HOST Gallery is in Clerkenwell in the original AOP Gallery space. It publishes Foto8 Magazine and specialises in documentary work.

'Destroying the Laboratory for the Sake of the Experiment'

For anyone who fancies an evening of photography and poetry from renowned Magnum photographer Mark Power and poet Daniel Cockrill. This is a collaborative project, taking Power and Cockrill across England as they spend a few days in a different part of the country each month. They respond to their surroundings in words and pictures, reflecting on the country that they both loathe and love. The juxtaposition of spoken word poetry and photography results in a speculative and intriguing mix while the Power/Cockrill alliance brings a fresh and exciting element to the photographic essay. The project is on-going and will result in a show at Atlas Gallery in London in June 2010.

Mark Power was made a full Member of Magnum in 2007 and has published four monographs since 1996. He is also Professor of Photography at the University of Brighton. In his most recent publication A Georgian Spring (Chris Boot, 2009) Power was one of 10 magnum photographers chosen to document present-day Georgia.

Daniel Cockrill is a poet from Essex. His first book Pie and Papier Mache was released in 2007. He also runs a stand up poetry night “for people who don't necessarily sleep under duvets made from poetry books.”
