The Artist in the Library - 3rd June UEL

Library and Learning Services, in collaboration with Clare Qualmann from the Institute of Performing Arts, is organising the following symposium to be held on Friday 3^rd June 2011 from 1pm to 5pm in Docklands. The event is free so the places are booking fast.

The Artist in the Library

A free half-day symposium organised by the Institute for Performing Arts Development (IPAD), and Library and Learning Services at the University of East London.

The symposium reflects on the relationships between artists and libraries; how their spaces, systems and structures provide inspirational possibilities. With speakers including artists, librarians and researchers the afternoon will present a range of projects that intervene in, respond to, or collaborate with a range of libraries both public and academic.

A full programme will be confirmed shortly, but meanwhile speakers include:

The venue is in the West Building Lecture at the Docklands Campus of the University of East London, starting at 1pm with coffee and cake, and finishing with a glass of wine.

Royal College Work - On Line

Two of the Royal College of Art’s most important collections have been made available to the general public through a new digitisation project which is accessible through the Visual Arts Data Service (VADS).

The Record of Student Work is a rare collection, containing over 30,000 slides of student work, which dates back to the 1960s and includes early work by notable College alumni including David Hockney, Tracey Emin, Ridley Scott and Thomas Heatherwick. A comprehensive and unique resource, it provides insight into the early creative processes of some of Britain’s best-known artists and designers, usually captured as they complete their postgraduate studies with installation shots from students’ degree shows.

The nature of the collection - comprised mainly of 35mm slides and usually locked in filing cabinets in the RCA library - has meant that many of these images have never been published. Now however, a three-year scanning project has resulted in over 5,000 of the most notable images from the collection being made publicly available for the first time.

Winner of the 2011 TED Award - JR

TED - Technology, Entertainment, Design Award. It began as an international conference in 1984 and is awarded annually to an exceptional individual who receives $100,000 and, “One Wish to Change the World.” After several months of preparation, s/he unveils his/her wish at an award ceremony held during the TED Conference. These wishes have led to collaborative initiatives with far-reaching impact. Jamie Oliver won it one year - this year it is the amazing community artist and photographer JR.

John Stezaker Exhibition

This is a much recommended exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery - Aldgate East Tube. (Free). John Stezaker has spent many years collecting film stills and montaging them with landscape postcards to create other unexpected dimensions in the image.

Sophie Barr will be discussing the work in relation to sub conscious thought on Friday 25th March. The Susan Hiller exhibition at the Tate Britain is also relevant to this subject but does cost to go!
